Methodology
Scope
Topten presents the most energy efficient electric houshold ovens. Not covered are ovens with a microwave function, portable ovens and small ovens (width, depth <15cm or height <12cm).
Technical criteria
Topten.ch lists only ovens that meet the following criteria:
- No pyrolytic cleaning function. This is unnecessary and consumes a lot of electricity: per cleaning as much as 4-5 baking cycles.
and
- Energy efficiency class A+ according to the new energy label (EU Regulation No. 65/2014). For this, at least one of the two baking processes must achieve an energy efficiency index (EEI) of less than 82.
or
- Both baking methods (convection and conventional) achieve an energy efficiency index (EEI) < 107 (class A of the energy label).
- Baking ovens with steamer function: minimum requirement energy class A+.
Data Sources
- Producers’ declarations (according to the EU energy label)
- National data-bases and Topten-sites
- Encodex data base
Order of presentation
The products are ranked according to their Energy Efficiency Index (EEI). More efficient ovens have a lower EEI.

Electricity costs
Assumptions:
- Costs for electricity during 15 years (product's life time)
- According to the declared energy consumption for 120 cycles per year, assuming 60 cycles with conventional and 60 cycles with fan forced mode.
- Tariff of electricity: 0.30 €/kWh (there can be large differences depending on country or electrical utility).
Volume (l)
Usable Volume of the cavity in litres (l).
Energy class
Energy efficiency class according to the EU Energy Label (regulation No. 65/2014). The classification scale is based on the EEI. For class A+ an EEI below 82 is required.
Energy (kWh)
Energy consumption per cycle in kWh/cycle for both heating functions (if available):
- Conventional
- Fan-forced convection
EEI
Energy Efficiency Index (EEI) according to the Energy Labelling regulation No 65/2014. More efficient ovens have a lower EEI. The EEI calculation is based on the energy consumption of a cycle in conventional mode or with fan-forced convection, whichever the lower, and the cavity volume.
