Selection criteria dishwashers

Methodology – Best products of Europe – presents the most energy efficient dishwashers of Europe. Topten presents two categories of dishwashers:
  • Freestanding dishwashers
  • Built-in dishwashers

Technical criteria

In order to qualify for, dishwashers must meet the following criteria:
  • Energy efficiency:
    • Freestanding dishwashers: energy class A++ or A+++ according to the EU energy label
    • Built-in dishwashers: energy class A+++ according to the EU energy label
  • Drying efficiency: class A according to the EU energy label
  • Maximum water consumption: 2800 litres per year, according to the Energy Label
  • Hot water supply is possible
  • Water/flood protection

Relevant values have to be provided by the producers. Suppliers who are not able to provide these values cannot claim to have their appliances presented on

Data sources

  • Suppliers’ declarations
  • National Topten-sites
  • Encodex data base

Order of presentation

The products are ordered according to their Energy Efficiency Index (EEI). The order can be changed individually by clicking on the head of the tables.

Brand, Model and similar models

Brand and model names. Products of similar construction and identical technical values are displayed only once, the similar models’ names are listed below. A click on the column of a product shows the detailed view.

Electricity and water costs

  • Costs of electricity and water (in €) during 15 years (product life) according to the annual energy and water consumption as declared on the EU energy label for 280 standard cycles.
  • Tariff of electricity: 0.20 € /kWh
  • Tariff of water: 0.26 € /100 litres (Source: EuP-study lot 25, Task 2)

Place settings

Capacity in number of standard place settings according to EN 50242.

Height / Width / Depth

Dimensions of the model in cm. Built-in models: max. dimensions of the niche. Freestanding models: external dimensions.

Water consumption

Water consumption per year in litres according to the declaration on the EU energy label. The consumption is based on 280 standard cycles per year.

Hot water supply

A direct connection to hot water is possible, usually for water of max. 60°C. Dishwashers have one water pipe, and most models can be connected either to cold or warm water. When connected to the hot water, the dishwasher does not need to heat up the water electrically. A direct supply of hot water saves energy if the water is heated with renewable energies, a heat pump or by community heating. Even if the water is heated with domestic fuel oil or gas a direct hot water supply can be considered.

Noise emissions

Noise in decibel (db(A)) during cleaning according to the declaration on the EU energy label (measured according to IEC 60704-2-3).

Efficiency class: energy/ drying efficiency

The energy efficiency / drying efficiency class according to the EU energy label. The energy efficiency classes range from A+++ (most efficient) to A (least efficient allowed on the market). All dishwashers on Topten and most on the market have a class A drying efficiency.

Energy class Energy Efficiency Index (EEI)
A+++ EEI < 50
A++ 50 ≤ EEI < 56
A+ 56 ≤ EEI < 63
A 63 ≤ EEI < 71

According to the Ecodesign requirements only dishwashers with an energy class A, A+, A++ or A+++ are allowed on the EU market since 1 December 2011. And all all dishwashers except small ones (7 and less place settings) must have a class A drying efficiency.

Energy consumption

Annual energy consumption in kWh according to the declaration on the EU energy label. The consumption is based on 280 standard cycles per year.

Energy Efficiency Index

Energy Efficiency Index (EEI) according to the Energy Labelling regulation No 1059/2010. The EEI is the ratio of a model's annual energy consumption and the energy consumption of a standard model with the same number of place settings. The lower the EEI, the more energy efficient a dishwasher.

Standards and Labels

  • The european council for an energy efficient economy eceee provides a status overview on all products in the Ecodesign & Energy Labelling process
  • Coolproducts informs about the EU ecodesign process on washing machines and other products. It is a coalition of NGOs' campaign for a stronger, fast Ecodesign Directive to save the climate and money.
